Maui Mayor Richard Bissen has denounced the actions of a man who allegedly lobbed a rock at a Hawaiian monk seal in Lahaina as unacceptable behavior.

The 38-year-old man from Washington state facing federal charges for allegedly throwing a rock at a Hawaiian monk seal off Lahaina this month did not know it is an endangered species, regrets his actions and had no intention of harming the marine mammal, according to his attorney.
