Russian scientists from the St. Petersburg Pasteur Institute and partner organizations discovered multiple viral species in ticks across northwestern Russia, including viruses previously found only in East Asia and four potentially new lineages. Analysis of 42 ticks collected between 2021–2023 from Arkhangelsk Oblast, Karelia, and surrounding regions revealed genetic variants distinct from Asian strains, suggesting independent viral ecosystems in Eurasia. Researchers emphasize that detecting viruses in ticks does not confirm human disease risk and that additional laboratory and epidemiological work is needed to assess potential dangers.
