Moldova’s Defence Ministry, cited by Deschide.md , said the Shahed entered Moldovan airspace at 16:20 from the direction of Slavianorebca in Ukraine and flew towards Bender, crossing the Transnistrian region. It then headed towards central Moldova, passing near Chisinau and disrupting the landing of several aircraft before reaching Bălănești and Cetireni in Ungheni district. The drone left Moldovan airspace at 16:37 near Zagarancea, in Ungheni district, and continued towards Golăiești in Romania’s Iași county, according to the ministry.

The 2026 Tour of Romania will bring together approximately 150 cyclists from 23 teams representing 16 countries between September 9 and 13. Italian Olympic champion Elia Viviani will also attend the race as manager of Italy’s national team. The five-stage competition will cover more than 800 kilometers, beginning in Chișinău, Moldova, and ending with a final circuit in Bucharest.

A merchant ship caught fire on the evening of August 27 in the Black Sea, in Romania's exclusive economic zone, and the crew of 12 sailors was rescued by border police officers from the Coast Guard and by another merchant ship in the area, News.ro announced. The rescue operation was difficult because of the large waves in the area.  "The ship was hit, and it seems to have sunk, but for now we don't know by whom and by what," commented president Nicuşor Dan. Representatives of the Romanian Naval Authority (ANR) announced that, on Thursday, at around 17:55, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Service within the ANR received an alert regarding the ship Progress IV, flagged in the Dominican Republic, the last known position being located in Romania's exclusive economic zone, approximately 15 nautical miles from Sfântu Gheorghe.  "The merchant ship Mohamad B headed to the area immediately, and at the same time the rescue ships ARSVOM, SAR Ares and SAR Artemis were urgently mobilised, along with the Border Police’s ship MAI 0201, designated as the coordinator on site", ANR representatives stated.

Romanian president Nicusor Dan , in a press conference at Chișinău on August 27, announced that new consultations with the parties on nominating a new prime minister will follow on September 1, and he assured that "we will find a majority for a stable government." He refused to elaborate on the source of his optimism, however. According to Digi24 , asked about the option of a technocratic government, the head of state said that "one with political ministers is much more likely." Romania has been without a full-fledged government since May 5 – when the Social Democrats (PSD) left the coalition of centrist parties to overthrow prime minister Ilie Bolojan with the help of far-right AUR.  The interim government of PM Bolojan has served in a limited capacity in an attempt to optimise the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), due to reach an end on August 31, and avoid political turmoil that would have negatively impacted the sovereign rating reviews scheduled over the summer.  The outcome was mixed: Fitch reversed a planned downgrade in July after four of the six PNRR reforms were legislated and Moody’s took a similar decision a week later, warning that high implementation risks surrounding the country’s multi-year fiscal consolidation programme could lead to a downgrade if political support for further deficit reduction weakens. Both rating agencies pointed to the further fiscal plans, primarily the 2027 budget plan, as key for Romania maintaining the investment-grade rating.  More recently, Romania’s lawmakers abandoned one of the remaining two reforms ( the Wage Law for the budgetary sector ) and approved a version of the Integrity Law (the sixth reform) that prompted broad criticism as allegedly touching upon the rule of law and lowering the standards of transparency.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Chisinau to take part in celebrations marking Moldova's Independence Day.

Romanian interim prime minister Ilie Bolojan sent a message on Thursday, August 27, marking 35 years after the proclamation of the Republic of Moldova’s independence, saying that Romania has been and will remain “the closest partner.” The prime minister recalled that Romania was the first state to recognize the independence of the Republic of Moldova, on August 27, 1991.  “Happy birthday, Moldova! Happy birthday, Bessarabian brothers!” Bolojan said in a Facebook post . The official emphasized that Romanians and Bessarabians are bound by “the same language, a shared history and a common destiny.” Several festivities are taking place in Chisinau, including a military parade and a concert, to mark the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova, celebrated on August 27.

The presence of Russian troops in a former Soviet enclave is complicating negotiations for Chisinau's accession to the EU bloc.

The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers, meeting in Chisinau, approved an agreement to establish a steering committee for the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
